The Friday Morning Bookclub Gives In The Shadow Of The Banyan 3.5 Omelets

Amazon readers gave in The Shadow of the Banyan 4.6 stars

Goodreads readers gave In The Shadow of the Banyan 4.04 stars

The Friday Morning Bookclub was all over the place when it came to rating this month’s book. Some loved it and gave it 5 omelets and others only gave it 1 omelet. The one thing we could all agree on was that what was done to the Cambodian people by the Khmer Rouge was an atrocity.

The story told through the voice of 7-year-old Raami, is actually based on the experiences of the author. Vaddey Ratner, was 5 years old when the Khmer Rouge came into power. Once again, I learned more about history by reading this book than I ever did in school. I highly recommend the audio book which is actually lyrical at times. I was one of those that thoroughly enjoyed the book….4 omelets for me!

shadow“In the Shadow of the Banyan, is the story of  a 7-year-old Cambodian girl named Raami  and her struggle to survive under the Khmer Rouge.

The author, Vaddey Ratner was five years old when the Khmer Rouge came into power. For four years she lived under the brutal regime before escaping to the United States.

“Ratner’s remarkable debut novel transforms her childhood experiences into the finest of literary fiction . . . A powerful testament to the tenacity of love and family in the face of unspeakable inhumanity.”
