No More Letters Osama!!! Incendiary By Chris Cleave

Filed under: Book Recomendations,Books Into Movies,Give Aways,Incendiary — susanbright @ 9:24 am

How ironic is it that the morning I plan to post a review of Incendiary I wake up to the news that Osama bin Laden is dead!

If it were not for the fact that we were sponsoring a give away, I probably would have never read Incendiary by Chris Cleave. How could I ask other people to read this book, if I wasn’t going to read it? I felt obligated to at least give it a try and I am glad that I did. Incendiary is a powerful book and one that completely drew me in.

Petal is a young mother living in London, with her husband, a policeman who is a member of the bomb squad. One evening while her husband and son are at an Arsenal soccer match, Petal ends up back in her flat with Jasper Black, a reporter she had met at a neighborhood bar.  While Petal and Jasper are in the throes of sex, with the game on the television, the unthinkable happens.

At first, I thought the telly was bust. There was a flash and I thought the tube was blown. But the ball was still there and the goalposts were still there. It was just the stand behind the goal that had disappeared in a white cloud. It looked like a fog bank. I wondered how fog had suddenly got itself into Arsenal’s brand-new stadium like that.

Both her husband and son are among the 1000+ people killed and Petal’s life begins to spin out of control. Ironically, Incendiary, written in the form of a letter to Osama bin Laden “as a plea against violence” was published July 7, 2005, the same day that four bombs were detonated in London by suicide bombers killing 56  people. Chris Cleave’s new book Incendiary was removed  from shelves, advertisements for the book were removed and posters were torn down which may be the reason many of us had never heard of Incendiary and did not realize that it was actually written before the New York Times bestseller Little Bee. Incendiary was made into a movie and was awarded the 2006 Somerset Maugham Award. Incendiary is not a pleasant read. It is not something that any mother wants to think about, however it is a riveting book about guilt, love, grief and survival. The story builds and builds, gathering momentum along the way until it comes to a catastrophic conclusion. I could not put it down!

Read the book? Why not check out the movie trailer!
