Dreams Of Joy By Lisa See

Filed under: Book Recomendations,Dreams Of Joy — susanbright @ 5:36 pm

I was excited to read that Lisa See has written a new book. I am a huge fan and have read several of her books. Snowflower and the Secret Fan was my favorite. The book  takes place in 19th century China and is a wonderful story of the friendship between Lily and Snowflower, too  “laotongs” or old sames bound together for life. Anyone who read Snowflower will not forget the descriptive process of foot binding.

See’s next book, Peony in Love takes place in 17th century China. Peony is celebrating her 16th birthday and her father arranges for a showing of her favorite opera Peony Pavillion, the story of  a  lovesick 16-year-old girl who starves herself to death only to find love in the after life. The book is described as  a “coming-of-age story, a ghost story, a family saga and a work of musical and social history.”  I did not enjoy Peony in Love nearly as much as Snowflower and actually found the story a little strange, but not strange enough that I did not want to read her next book Shanghai Girls.

Shanghai Girls is about two sisters, Pearl and May living the good life in Shanghai until their father gambles away the family fortune. In desperate need of money, he  is forced to sell the sisters to men who have traveled from California to find  brides.   The sisters move to Los Angeles’s Chinatown with their new husbands, trying to adjust to husbands they do not know and a strange land. Pearl and May share a secret and when years later Pearl’s daughter Joy discovers the truth all of their lives are changed forever. Shanghai Girls was a heart wrenching story.

Lisa See’s newest book Dreams of Joy starts off where Shanghai Girls ended. Joy, after discovering that her birth father was the artist Z.G. Li , a man who both her mother and aunt were in love with rushes off to Shanghai to find him.” Joy throws herself into the New Society of Red China” and Pearl follows. This book is definitely going on my “to read” list.
