Are there any subjects that you just do not want to read about? I was about a third through the book Promises To Keep by Jane Green and was enjoying getting to know the characters. Callie is happily married with children and is a photographer. Her sister Steph is a vegan chef and at the end of each chapter there is a recipe (nice touch). Callie’s best friend Lila is finally in a committed relationship. Everyone is happy and it is Callie’s birthday. Life is good! Callie’s wonderful husband starts to make a beautiful speech about much he loves his wife and how it is coming up on 5 years since she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Bells started going off in my head…….I know what has to be coming next! I can’t bear to read anymore. I closed the book. For me that topic is breast cancer. Are there any topics that you can not bear to read about?

Several years ago, when my daughter was a freshman in college, a friend of mine gave me “Lucky” by Alice Sebold – it was her memoir of how she had overcome being raped while in college. After the first page, I knew that I couldn’t read this book – I kept thinking of my own daughter!
Alice Sebold’s next book dealt with a woman who killed her mother. I wouldn’t read that either.
