Thank you Audrey! The Book Thief by  Markus Zusak is correct. After nine year old Liesel’s father is accused of being a Communist and is arrested, Liesel is sent to live with a foster family taking with her The Gravedigger’s Handbook. Liesel’s foster father reads the book to her at night when she cannot sleep. “If I die anytime soon, you make sure they bury me right,” he tells her. The Gravedigger’s Handbook was the first book Liesel had stolen but certainly not her last. This was a book club favorite!
