Thank you Esther! Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon is correct!
The Cemetary Of Forgotten Books was a special, secret library hidden in Barcelona. It’s shelves were filled with old books, that had been lost or that were in danger of being destroyed. These books were protected by a secret society. If you were given the honor of visiting The Cemetary Of Forgotten Books, you were allowed to choose one book which you would be responsible for protecting for life.
“A labyrinth of passageways and crammed bookshelves rose from base to pinnacle like a beehive woven with tunnels, steps, platforms, and bridges that presaged an immense library of seemingly impossible geometry.”
That would be one of my favorites! “The Shadow of the Wind”

The creation of the Cemetary of Forgotten Books in The Shadow of the Wind was so imaginative. I always pictured some dark and dusty old British-stlye library with rickety stacks of books. Loved it!
