Books You Just Can’t Get Into

Filed under: Literary Tidbits — susanbright @ 9:59 pm

It is not often that I start a book that I just can’t get into. Sometimes I wonder if it is just me. Maybe it is the mood I am in or something in the air. Today I started reading Three Cups Of Tea by Greg Mortenson, which is supposed to be an amazing book. It was a #1 New York Times Best Seller afterall! How can a story about “One Mans Mission to Promote Peace … One School At A Time”, not be a terrific read? Before I knew it, I found myself skimming and then actually skipping, first sentences, then paragraphs, and finally pages.  So… needless to say, I put the book down, and MAY attempt to read it another day… or year. Perhaps if it was our book club book I would have been more tenacious and kept reading! Tell me I am not the only one! What did you think of Three Cups Of Tea? Are there any books, you just couldn’t get into?

  1. The funny thing is, I felt the same way. Many people have told me that it is such an amazing book. I have tried to pick it up many times, but it just doesn’t draw me in. It was the same with “The DaVinci Code”. Everyone raved about it – even people that aren’t big readers. But I couldn’t get into that. And there have been books that I have loved that other people didn’t like. It all comes down to personal taste, and everyone’s is different. 🙂

  2. I admit that I, too, belong to the “Not Fans of Three Cups of Tea” fanclub. Actually, at first I was intrigued and impressed with the extent of his committment to the project, but then I just felt that it was more of the same and really sort of strange. Having said that, I know many people who loved the book, so, to each his/her own. Greg Mortenson will be speaking at the Baltimore Speakers Series at the Meyerhoff on Tuesday, April 27th. If anyone is interested they can contact http://www.baltimorespeakersseries.org for tickets.

  3. Another book I had a problem with was Angela’s Ashes. So depressing. I didn’t finish that one either.
